Fresh off the heels of 2024’s Longlegs, and this years sleeper hit The Monkey, Osgood Perkins returns with Keeper. Directed by Perkins from a screenplay by Nick Lepard, Keeper follows a couple taking a romantic getaway to a cabin for the weekend, but not everything is what it seems. Not much else should be said plot wise to avoid spoilers because the best way to go into this movie is as blind as possible. Rocking a 99 minute runtime, Keeper is able to move pretty quickly, keeping audiences guessing until about the last 25 minutes or so, when we get a huge exposition dump from one of the leads, Rossif Sutherland.

Sutherland along with Tatiana Maslany, have good chemistry and work well off one another, but the film truly does belong to Maslany, who commands the movie with the most screen time. Tatiana Maslany is quickly becoming a name to look out for in the film industry. This movie, if nothing else, is a showcase for her talent, which was glimpsed in her smaller role in The Monkey. The film features smaller roles by Birkett Turton and Eden Weiss, but Maslany and Sunderland are the main focus. The biggest faults of the film, in my opinion, is that it’s story takes a little too long to get going, as well as waiting a little too long for the big third act twist. The films CGI is also not very impressive and takes away from a scene which should be frightening but all I could think about was the lackluster effects.

Overall, for me, Keeper was unfortunately a forgettable experience, by no fault of Perkins as he was just director. The film itself looks amazing and takes big swings but overall falls a little flat. This could be in part to the fact that Horror has been unstoppable as of late, that Keeper just cant stand toe to toe with some of the greats of this and the last decade. With an amazing lead performance from Tatiana Maslany, but not much else memorable about it, I wouldn’t be able to recommend Keeper to anyone, but if inclined, check it out as I’m sure there will be some aspect of Keeper viewers can enjoy.
6/10.
