Review: Absolute Wonder Woman Vol 1 (The Last Amazon)

DC took some big swings with their absolute Universe when it launched in October of 2024 and I don’t think anyone, myself included thought it was going to be the mega hit it is currently. Absolute Wonder Woman is no exception. This series starts off with a bang and doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing. Written by Kelly Thompson, this iteration of Diana rather than being raised on Themyscira, was raised in Hell and was taught magic in addition to her other definitive traits.

The decision to raise Diana in a foreign location is a bold one that works very well. It gives her more abilities and a flying Pegasus skeleton as a companion, giving her a darker look and feel while still keeping the kind, heroic core of the character intact. This story just introduces us to a more badass version of Wonder Woman. Artists Hayden Sherman and Mattia De Lulis illustrate this series in a way that makes it feel almost mythical and it looks unlike anything on stands currently.

Overall, Absolute Wonder Woman is a visual feast for fans of the character and universe. With impeccable art and writing, Trippy page layout at times and a version of Diana that’s more unique and fresh than she’s been in recent years, DC has another winner on their hands with this one. Easy to pick up and jump right into, Absolute Wonder Woman can stand toe to toe with other entries into the Absolute Universe, and look good while it’s doing it.

9/10.
