Al Ewing has made quite a name for himself in the comic book community. Under Marvel he gave the world The Immortal Hulk which most regard as one of Marvels best runs with the character. With Absolute Green Lantern, Ewing and artist Jahnoy Lindsay give us by far the most drastic retelling of a character under the Absolute banner. Most Green Lantern stories follow Hal Jordan, this story features Jordan but our lead Lantern is Jo Mullein who fans will recognize from 2019’s Far Sector.

This series strays the farthest from the usual iteration of the characters and while I can’t say if it will pay off in the endgame, these are some exciting re structuring ideas that seem promising in the coming issues. I can’t stress enough how much this series rebuilds the mythos of not only the Green Lantern Corps, but all the corresponding Corps. This part of the DC universe has been pretty uniform and hasn’t really been shaken up since the Blackest Night even in the 2009.

Putting Jo Mullein as the lead is a decision I can get behind and be excited for, since I really enjoyed her character in Far Sector but not so much the series itself, so to see her get another chance to lead a series is welcome. The series also introduced the villain Black Hand in an interesting way that doesn’t seem as exciting but that’s the only complaint I can make about this new version of the Lanterns. I can’t wait to see where they take these characters further and hope this Absolute Green Lantern goes as wild as it’s promising to.
