Review: Absolute Martian Manhunter Vol 1 (Martian Vision)

Deniz Camp seems to be an unstoppable force in comics these days. With Marvel he has taken the helm writing the Ultimates (One of the best comics Marvel has put out in years), with Image he is writing Assorted Crisis Events, a wholly original Sci-fi piece that at times bears too much comparison to our day and age, and for DC he has reinvented Martian Manhunter for the Absolute line. I hadn’t heard too much about this series so I was able to go in blind and i’m thankful for that, because this series is incredible. This series should be getting as much attention as Absolute Batman. Yes, it’s that good.

This series is by far the trippiest looking DC has put out in recent memory, perhaps ever. This is thanks to series artist Javier Rodriguez. His work is so unique and crisp and bright. He also illustrated Zatanna: Bring Down The House, a mini series in 2024 thats equally incredible. Javiers art to me is reminiscent of Darwyn Cooke, with the soft round features and 70’s aesthetic. Camp crafts a psychedelic buddy cop feel between John Jones and the martian thats as engaging as it is mysterious. So much in the story is told through color and imagery that at times Camp’s incredible dialogue and writing isn’t necessary to convey story beats. No matter what publisher Camp is writing for, he has the impeccable talent to write characters so human. Whether they be Martian, or Superhero, Camp gives them such humanity I don’t think i’ve read anything that can compare.

Absolute Martian Manhunter is a comic unlike most others. It challenges the reader to think and analyze whats going on in the minds and world of these characters. The art and style alone challenge the reader in ways that are refreshing and not dull. To interpret and what is real and what isn’t. This series, though unfortunately limited to 12 issues, is truly two creative minds at the top of their game and I love that comics are becoming a medium where important messages can be relayed. I absolutely love everything DC is doing with the Absolute line of titles, and Martian Manhunter, with its very epic and cosmic themes and imagery, is not only the strangest thing DC has to offer on a monthly basis, but one of its absolute best. Don’t sleep on this series.

10/10.
