When one thinks of the Horror genre, there are classics that immediately come to mind; Halloween, Friday The 13th, The Shining, etc. In the years that follow I fully believe Obsession will join the ranks of these classics. Written and directed by Curry Barker, Obsession tells the story of Bear and Nikki (Michael Johnston and Indi Navarrette). When Bear makes a wish using a One Wish Willow to get Nikki to love him more than anyone in the world, he gets his wish, but not in the traditional sense. This film is dominated by Indi Navarrette’s performance of Nikki. All of the scares and tension in the movie come from her unbelievable performance. I don’t think its too early to say that she will be referenced with some of the absolute horror greats such as Jamie Lee Curtis and Sissy Spacek.

This film has such a lived in feel to it. The world feels so well put together, maybe due to it having similarities to our world, with supernatural or cosmic occurrences. Obsession has a very grounded feel for it, with the One Wish Willow having an unearthly presence. One thing I love in a horror film is when it can work, but not have to over explain, or explain really at all. Obsession works so well as a story that there really needs to be no back story or exposition to get the film going or keep it moving. It works flawlessly in its own world, while potentially setting up an anthology style of future storytelling. The score by Rock Burwell also gives the film a romance undertone that will make you feel like Bear and Nikkis connection is genuine and strong, but can change and distort on the fly.

Curry Barker and company should be enjoying this massive success that is Obsession. I don’t think Blumhouse has had a hit like this since the first Five Nights at Freddy’s. Honestly I can’t say enough good things about Obsession. From the acting to the world building to the cast and the score, this movie is so well rounded and checks all the boxes for what horror can and should be. I would absolutely love to see this franchise grow and expand, but if this is it, I would be more than happy. Obession is the type of horror film that has already grown in popularity by word of mouth alone and in a day and age where the internet is where most get their information, its extremely refreshing to see a film like obsession that everyone should be talking about, not only talking about it, but making the trip out to support it as well.
10/10.
